What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, a compound found naturally in hemp plants. It's a naturally occurring substance that's used in products like oils, to promote a feeling of peace and overall wellness. Unlike its cousin tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it's NOT psychoactive and does not cause hallucination (yup, already gotten that question a whole lot!). Some people have used it for enhancing overall wellness and well-being while others are using it for targeted support of a specific system or challenge.

As you read on, you'll see it can be used topically in muscle rubs or ointments as well as internally through droppers or gummies. This page is meant to keep things simple and straightforward, but the science behind this is FASCINATING!

Our wellness cabinet can never be too big, and CBD is something you'll be wanting to add without a doubt! Whether you're thriving in your health or looking to tackle some larger health issues, CBD will become a staple in your home after the information you read here. I hope you love learning about the health tools that make a huge difference for you and your family because I have a ton of information to share!

Are Hemp and Marijuana the same?

No, hemp and marijuana are NOT the same. They are both a part of the Cannabis plant family. Hemp is completely different from marijuana in it's function, cultivation, and application.

Under U.S. law, cannabis is the plant itself, and hemp and marijuana are specific parts of the plant. The definitions of what is classified as marijuana or CBD are quite clear – at least according to the codes of the United States.

Hemp refers to the sterilized seeds, stems, stalks and roots. Marijuana is in reference to the viable seeds, leaves and flowers.

Unfortunately, marijuana has come to be the all-in-one term for the cannabis plant and all of its useful parts. When one refers to marijuana they are referring to the leaves and flowering portions of the plant that contain many cannabinoids, which have both mental and physical effects on the human body when ingested. Marijuana with these effects are produced on cannabis plants with greater than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the psychoactive portion of the plant.

CBD VS. THC

While CBD and THC both bind to the CB-2 receptor, they interact with the CB-1 receptors in different ways. Because of its molecular structure, THC is able to bind directly with CB-1 receptors. When this bond is formed, the reaction creates signals that are sent to the brain, which results in the the psychoactive effects of "getting high."

Research shows that CBD does not bond directly with CB-1 receptors*, and its presence can even negate the bond between THC and the CB-1 receptors, effectively neutralizing the psychoactive effects induced by THC.  *Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4120766/

WILL CBD GET ME "HIGH"? No, CBD will not get you high. CBD is a cannabinoid that does NOT have euphoric side effects.

Is CBD Legal?

In December of 2018, the House and Senate passed – and President Trump signed – the new 2018 Farm Act. The Act removes hemp – officially defined as cannabis plants containing less than .3% THC – from the Schedule 1 Controlled Substances list from a Congressional standpoint.

While still considered a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance by the DEA, CBD is considered the same as any other agricultural commodity from a federal viewpoint, making it legal to grow and purchase in the United States. While hemp-derived CBD sourced from marijuana plants still remains subject to individual state laws, when sourced from hemp products, CBD can be purchased and consumed in all 50 states as long as it is grown in accordance with the Act. This means that CBD’s legal status on a federal level is quite clear, however, on a state level there’s some variation.

This is where it gets complicated. Some states still have laws on the books that conflict in a technical way with federal law. Since we cannot be experts on each individual’s state laws (especially with them changing rapidly), it is highly encouraged that you check the status of your own state and make your own informed decisions.
